June 7, 2010
We're anticipating a busy year in 2010; plans are already
underway for an outstanding Homecoming event October 15 and 16, when we
gather to celebrate our 50th reunion. That makes us an honor class this
year, putting the Class of 1960 in the spotlight. One of the means by
which we, as a class, can "pay it forward" to a deserving WHS student -
and at the same time receive positive recognition - is by collectively
making a commitment to provide a meaningful college scholarship for a
WHS graduate of the 2010/2011 school year. This is most easily and
efficiently done through the WHS Ex-Students' Association.
We all know that the costs of a college education have been
rising alarmingly in recent years. Many bright, deserving young people
could be prevented from enrolling at college campuses in the fall
because of financial restrictions. During our youthful days, Waxahachie
schools provided us all with an outstanding base education, and we went
on to prepare for the future with a variety of educational venues. How
better can we support Waxahachie schools and the community than to
provide scholarship funds for the youth of today so that they can
realize their dreams for the future?
The Ex-Students' Association has designed a program to make
that happen, but they need our help and commitment to do it. When we
elect to participate, a new scholarship will be created in the name of
the WHS Class of 1960. At the proper time, the Scholarship Selection
Committee will research and evaluate applicants (a parent of applicants
must also have been a WHS graduate) and then name the recipient. The
scholarship presentation will be made by a representative member of our
class during the 2011 WHS Scholarship Night event. Our class will also
be recognized for its generosity at the annual luncheon during
Homecoming this year.
The creators of this scholarship program describe it as an
opportunity to increase awareness of the contributions that the honor
classes make to the scholarship fund and recognize the class' generosity
at a homecoming event when so many will be present. Benefits of the new
scholarship program include the fact that more than one student will
receive a scholarship each year and the alumni class has access to a
recognized scholarship selection process and to a tax-protected trust
fund account. It's a win-win!
This is an important commitment. Our goal is to provide a
scholarship significant in its monetary amount, and we believe the Class
of 1960 can and will "step up to the plate" this year in honor of the
upcoming celebration of our Golden Anniversary. During recent years as
members of our class approached retirement, the city of Waxahachie has
drawn many of us back home to live. There must be a reason for that.
Would you like to contribute to this scholarship as a way to express
appreciation and give back to the community for all we received in our
youth?
For your convenience, a form is available for printing by
CLICKING HERE. Please fill in the information and the amount you
can contribute toward the scholarship. If you prefer, you can
participate by sending (between now and Homecoming) smaller, partial
donations until you reach the total amount you would like to donate to
our Scholarship Fund.
